Sophie was building an “ice station” out of snow pillows in her backyard when her toy walkie talkie made a crackle-hiss-pop sound.
Then, a low voice came through:
“Ice-88... online… urgent signal… edge melting… message trapped…”
Sophie sat up. “Who are you?”
“This is Beacon 7. I'm broadcasting from under the melting shelf. The last memory capsule is sinking. You are the closest signal point.”
Her free license kids walkie talkie glowed icy blue. A flicker pulsed with the voice’s rhythm.
“To retrieve the capsule, you must solve the Frostline Riddle. Only those who think cold and clear may hear the truth.”
Sophie turned down the lights, switched on her snow lamp, and said: “I'm listening.”
“I crack but don’t break.
I float but don’t fly.
I remember but never speak.
What am I?”
She thought. “Ice!”
“Correct. Capsule vault unlocked.”
The next clue came through in static Morse code. Sophie used her snow globe’s tiny compass to decode it—“UNDER LAYER 7.”
Sophie transformed her bedroom into an arctic base:
She placed the toy walkie talkie at the center, and with every step deeper into the “ice,” the voice whispered:
“Closer... warmer... no, colder... capsule found.”
Inside a tea tin under her bed: an old key. “You’ve recovered it!” said the voice. “Now answer this to activate the beacon.”
Her mom joined as “Aurora Whisper,” speaking only when the flashlight flickered.
Her dad became “Dr. Glacier,” a frozen explorer who gave her “heat puzzles” to stop the ice from cracking.
Together, they placed the key into the vault (a shoebox) and flipped the switch.
“Beacon restored. Melting slowed. Signal secured.”
Some voices echo in silence, waiting through frost and time.
With a toy walkie talkie, a living room becomes the edge of the world.
With a free license kids walkie talkie, a child becomes the one who listens when the cold speaks.
Because even in ice… there are stories that burn to be heard.
